Aaron R.W. Shull, J.D., LL.M.
Barrister and solicitor, principal of Shull Law Professional Corporation, and a long-standing voice on the legal and policy dimensions of cybersecurity, privacy and artificial intelligence.
Aaron Shull advises business and government clients on the legal questions that arise where technology, security and commercial life meet. His practice concentrates on cybersecurity and incident response, privacy and data protection, the governance of artificial intelligence, corporate counsel work, and the disputes that follow when those matters go wrong.
Before founding the practice in its current form, Aaron spent more than a decade at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), an independent think tank in Waterloo, Ontario. He joined CIGI in 2013 and went on to serve as Managing Director and General Counsel, responsible for the organization's legal, corporate, contractual, employment, intellectual property and compliance matters, and later as Research Director of Digitalization, Security and Democracy, leading work on how digital transformation affects national security, democratic governance and public trust. He continues his association with CIGI as a Senior Fellow.
Earlier in his career he practised law in international, regulatory and environmental matters, and served as a staff editor of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law.
Teaching and public engagement
Aaron has taught at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law, Carleton University's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and Wilfrid Laurier University. He speaks regularly on space, cyber, AI and defence policy, and his commentary has appeared in The Globe and Mail, the National Post and the Toronto Star, and on CBC News, CTV and BNN Bloomberg.
